Australia: Government uses Jobs Fund for Youth Community Centres

Australia, 22 October 2009: Australian Prime Minister and Youth Minister Kate Ellis announced funding of $10 million to support the development community youth centres in priority employment areas.

Up to five mixed-purpose youth centres - arts, business and community - will be constructed in priority employment areas, in rural and outer metropolitan areas.

The concept was aired at the  Youth 2020 Summit, a community consultation session held by the federal government in 2008.  The Youth Ministry website reports that 'Young people saw these centres as providing linkages between them, the arts, the community sector and private enterprise, particularly with regard to encouraging entrepreneurship and community-building activities for young people.'
