Hong Kong SAR, China: Youth unemployment rate falls, govt says programmes are working

Hong Kong SAR, 19 October 2009: Third quarter labour market statistics show a 5.4% decrease in unemployment, seasonally adjusted. This includes a 2.7% drop in unemployment among 15-19 year olds.

The Hong Kong SAR Census and Statistics Department's latest report, for July to September 2009, shows the first improvement in the labour market since the beginning of the global financial and economic crisis.

Third quarter labour market statistics show a 5.4% decrease in unemployment, seasonally adjusted.  This includes a 2.7% drop in unemployment among 15-19 year olds.  The improvement is said to have been driven by improvements in the local economy.  The Government claims that the change in youth employment figures demonstrates the effectiveness of their youth-directed programmes.
