Ghana: Government to employ 100,000 youths

Ghana, 16 September 2009: The Ghana Governments, through its National Youth Employment Programme, will employ 100,000 youths by December 2010 in a range of projects, including beach cleaning and forestation.

Graphic Ghana reports that there has been a shortfall in the number of youth engaged by the NYEP - only 20% of the 600,000 target figure has been achieved.

Additional funding for the programme may come from an increased allocation of the proceeds of a communication services tax, if government approval is given.  An NYEP fund will also be established in order to receive funds from private and foreign sources.

The project plans to employ youth in areas such as agriculture, mobile phone repairs and assemblage, health extension and afforestation.
