HICAP helps provide career opportunities for young people in Asia

Green Hotelier, June 10, 2015 - A new partnership between HICAP and the Youth Career Initiative (YCI) is helping to provide career opportunities for disadvantaged young people in Asia Pacific.

The annual Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP) organised and co-hosted by Burba Hotel Network (BHN), Horwath HTL, and Stiles Capital Events, has announced a new partnership with International Tourism Partnership (ITP) programme the Youth Career Initiative which works with hotels and NGOs in the region to identify disadvantaged young people and offer them training, mentorship and real world work experience to improve their future employment opportunities.

YCI operates in 15 countries around the world, working with the international hotel industry to offer young people with limited socio-economic opportunities the chance to improve their life and work skills.

Jim Burba, president of BHN and HICAP co-host said, “We are very pleased to be able to provide financial support to the terrific work being done by YCI in the Asia Pacific region, and look forward to seeing the programme grow and create even more positive impact on the lives of young people in the region. HICAP is the most prominent annual gathering of the hotel investment community in the region, and we hope that by shining a spotlight on this programme we will encourage more hoteliers and industry leaders to support YCI's efforts in Asia Pacific.”

Currently operating in India, Vietnam, and Australia, with students trained at 17 hotels, and plans to expand to Thailand, YCI hopes to be the employment programme of choice for hotels in the Asia Pacific region. With 85% of students graduating and going on to employment or further education, YCI provides students with vital work and life skills, making them economically self-reliant and breaking the cycle of poverty.

Director of ITP and the Youth Career Initiative, Stephen Farrant, said, "YCI, created by the industry for the industry, has the power to transform lives. With an ambitious five year growth plan, we are delighted to welcome HICAP as our newest partner. 75 million young people worldwide are seeking employment, and 60% of young people in developing regions are out of employment, education or engaged in irregular employment. Meanwhile, the hotel industry is seeking new talent in local markets as it grows, so initiatives like YCI present a clear win-win for the industry and for some of the most vulnerable young people in society."

Tourism is a growth industry around the world providing one in eleven of all global jobs and is particularly important in developing nations. Working with some of the biggest international hotel brands and trusted NGO partners, YCI takes enthusiastic young people with poor life-chances and sets them on a different path via six months of training, work experience and mentoring. You can read more about the programme and its impact on the  YCI website.

The 26th annual HICAP will take place 14-16 October 2015 at the InterContinental Hong Kong. HICAP is Asia's largest and longest running hotel investment event, making it the most important gathering of hotel developers, investors, lenders, operators, and other industry executives.
